THE SEALED ROOM AND THE MAGICIAN

The Haunted Room in the Castle of St. Mark in St. Augustine is very old, sealed and forgotten hundreds of years ago; I crawled into the eerie inner chamber on hands and knees in the 1950s, and many times since. Each time I visited, the park service had done more and more to detract from the rumors of sealed alive prisoners, and their ghosts. Even the over-zealous "ghost hunters" have minimized the sheer eerieness of the place. One group of such said, without humor, 'we don't think the castle is haunted, all we found were a few orbs'. So, once again this November I returned to the room of dry bones, and invoked the "orbs" into myself. Judge as you will. Read a few accounts, and judge as you wish. Better, visit yourself.

Some lore from:

The night watchman of the fort has witnessed a young woman in a white dress wandering about the fort grounds and vanishing behind trees and walls.

A young Spanish soldier has also been spotted looking for a ring on the outer grounds of the fort. History tells of him being killed by a cannon ball while searching for this ring.

Some of the most unusual occurrences include the "Battle Echoes" heard by visitors. By placing an ear to the wall, it is said you can hear the echoes of cannon fire and yelling. There is also telling of a young soldier that can be seen leaning on the outside wall facing the bay after sundown.

In 1784 Colonel Garcia Marti assumed command of the fort. He was inundated with his duties, and his young beautiful wife, Delores, started looking elsewhere for affection. The man she found was her husband’s chief officer, Captain Manuel Abela. As legend has it, one day the Colonel and Captain were studying maps together, the Colonel noticed the scent of his wife’s perfume on Captain Abela. Captain Abela and Delores both disappeared immediately. The Colonel explained that Captain Abela was reassigned to Spain, and Delores got sick and went back to stay with family in Mexico. However, 50 years later a room was rediscovered with in a wall of the dungeon. In side this room was found ashes and bones.

Many rumors of the fort being haunted over the years seem to be very consistent. One investigator has seen a ghostly guard up in the tower and another person who had also seen a cloaked figured looking out from that same tower. Some who visit the fort say they have heard the Battle Echoes by placing their ear to the wall. They said they can hear cannon fires, yelling, screams and battling taking place. Then we have another story of a ghostly young soldier who is often seen leaning on one of the outside walls facing the bay just after sundown. Then some have seen a Spanish guard who smells still of garlic and sweat some say he faced death protecting the fort. While others have seen the ghost of many Native Americans who were imprisoned here. The night watchman of the fort has witnessed a young woman in a white dress wandering about the fort grounds and vanishing behind trees and walls. Young Spanish soldier has also spotted looking for a ring on the outer grounds of the fort. History tells of him being killed by a cannon ball while searching for this ring.
